The Mount Vernon Patriotic Memorial Committee has announced plans for the city’s annual Memorial Day Parade, set for Monday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Mount Vernon.

The parade, themed “Honoring 250 Years of American Heroes,” will commemorate those who gave their lives to preserve American liberties while fostering community spirit and patriotism. Immediately following the parade, the Knox County Veteran Services Office will host a Memorial Ceremony.

Organizers emphasized that the event is designed to honor veterans and fallen heroes, while also serving as a unifying celebration for the community.

“Our parade is intended and devoted to honor and remember those who gave their lives to preserve our liberties as Americans, as well as to promote community spirit and patriotism,” the committee stated in its April 8 announcement.

Parade participants must submit entry forms by May 15 to be considered. Staging details will be provided one week prior, with check‑in scheduled between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of East High Street and Edgewood Road.

Guidelines for participants include restrictions on clowns, requirements for animal entries to avoid private lawns and provide cleanup, and reminders to toss candy gently to spectators. Political organizations and elected officials may identify themselves with signage, but are asked to align displays with the parade’s theme.

Parade organizers underscored that maintaining the integrity and purpose of the celebration is their top priority. To ensure the parade remains a respectful tribute to veterans and fallen heroes, staff retain the discretion to remove any entries that are deemed inappropriate, offensive, dangerous, or inconsistent with the event’s mission.

Interested participants can register online through a provided link or by mailing completed forms to the Patriotic Memorial Committee at 236 South Main Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.

The Memorial Day Parade has long been a cornerstone of Mount Vernon’s civic calendar, blending solemn remembrance with festive community participation. This year’s theme underscores the nation’s 250‑year history of service and sacrifice, offering residents an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of American heroes while celebrating together.

For questions, participants may contact the committee at [email protected]. Organizers expressed hope that the parade would once again bring the community together in gratitude and pride, honoring those who gave their lives while strengthening bonds among neighbors.
