Heath Middle School sixth‑grade students took part in a tobacco information workshop hosted by the Licking County Health Department, learning about the risks and consequences of tobacco use.
The event, held on campus, brought together community vendors, health experts, and educators for a day of interactive activities, demonstrations, and discussions designed to help students make informed choices about their health. The workshop offered a hands-on approach to learning, combining practical exercises with presentations on the risks associated with nicotine and tobacco products. The department emphasized the importance of engaging students through interactive learning and community support.
"We had the pleasure of hosting a Tobacco Prevention Workshop for Heath Middle School’s sixth grade students, the Licking County Health Department said. "It was an energizing day filled with hands-on activities, meaningful conversations, and important lessons about making healthy choices."
Heath Middle School expressed gratitude for the community support that made the workshop possible.
“Thank you to all the vendors who came out to promote healthy lifestyles,” the school said.
The workshop answered the pressing question of why early education about tobacco matters. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 90% of adult smokers begin smoking before the age of 18, highlighting the critical need for preventative programs at the middle school level. By engaging students in age-appropriate conversations and activities, organizers aimed to provide the tools and knowledge necessary to resist peer pressure and understand the health consequences of tobacco use.
By combining education with community support, the Licking County Health Department and its partners hope to equip young people with the knowledge, confidence, and encouragement to choose a tobacco-free life, reinforcing the idea that healthy choices begin early.
Health experts emphasized the immediate benefits of quitting nicotine, noting that positive changes begin within hours of cessation. Community members are encouraged to call 1‑800‑QUIT‑NOW (1‑800‑784‑8669) or visit OhioQuits.org for free resources and guidance. The Licking County Health Department urges the public to take the first step toward a healthier life, reminding everyone that there is never a better time to quit than now, and that free help is available to support anyone ready to begin their journey toward a tobacco‑free future.
