St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon has announced it will hold a "Mass on the Grass" outdoor service on July 27.
According to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, this marks the first time the historic parish will conduct its worship service outdoors, inviting the community to gather on the church’s front lawn beneath a large maple tree. This initiative is part of a new approach for the church, offering a different setting for their regular Sunday service.
"By going outside for our Sunday service, we will be blending the sights and sounds of our worship tradition with those of the world outside our doors," said Fr. Charles Wilson, St. Paul’s rector. "If an ambulance roars by we will stop and pray for those inside. If a bee buzzes we will invite them into our songs. And any interested looks from passersby will be given a hearty wave of recognition. This is just a way of being the church in the world."
The service is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and is open to all attendees. While the ground may be soft, participants are encouraged to bring chairs for comfort. Light refreshments will be available after the service; however, no Kool-Aid will be served. In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors.
