Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) has announced the appointment of Michael Black as its new Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, effective July 1. Black, an alumnus from the class of 1995, returns to MVNU with over 25 years of experience in financial planning, investment management, and business operations.

Black previously worked as a Financial Planner and Regional Director at Money Concepts Wealth Management & Financial Planning. He also owns Black and Co. Employee Benefits Advisors, specializing in employee benefits and risk management. His history with MVNU includes roles in the admissions office and as a financial planning counselor from 1991 to 1999.

Reflecting on his return to MVNU, Black stated: “Over 25 years ago, I left MVNU with a deep sense of gratitude and purpose... In the years since, I’ve built and led a financial planning business... These opportunities have equipped me with the strategic insight... needed to help guide MVNU into a stronger and more resilient future.”

Black holds an MBA in Executive Management from Ashland University alongside his Bachelor of Business degree from MVNU. He is licensed in Life and Health Insurance as well as Property and Casualty Insurance.

MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman expressed enthusiasm about Black's appointment: “We are excited to welcome Michael Black... With 20 years of experience in business ownership... he brings a wealth of expertise in finance.” Castleman emphasized Black’s commitment to MVNU as both an alumnus and leader.

As CFO, Black will join the President’s Cabinet, overseeing budget planning, financial reporting, endowment management, facilities planning, insurance oversight, among other responsibilities. His vision aligns with maintaining Christian identity while ensuring academic excellence: “Specifically,... my vision for MVNU centers on three pillars: financial sustainability,... mission-aligned innovation,... maximizing student value.”

The university anticipates that Black's leadership will positively impact its future.
