Tyler Maddux, a worship arts major at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, is making his mark in the music world with heartfelt songs. Music has been a part of his life since childhood, influenced by his parents who were both involved in church music. "I’ve grown up with worship pastors," Maddux states. His journey began with learning piano and guitar, eventually leading to songwriting.
In 2023, Maddux recorded his debut album "Is Anyone Listening" and started performing at various venues including coffee shops and music festivals. His band, Tyler Maddux and Co., played significant events like SonFest at MVNU alongside artists such as Hulvey and Josiah Queen. "This is huge," said Maddux about the opportunity.
The band consists of close friends including drummer Jadon Bird and bassist Jensen Thompson. They have expanded to include others like Nasir Cousin and Maddux's sister Grace, adding unique dynamics to their performances.
Maddux recently released an EP titled "Are You Still There," reflecting his commitment to creating sincere music. He expresses a calling to worship ministry but remains open to wherever his musical path leads him.
Balancing studies, rehearsals, and leadership roles on campus keeps Maddux busy but grounded. He is involved in MVNU’s Music and Ministry team and the Student Government Association. "I like being involved," he shares.
Maddux credits divine intervention for many opportunities he has received. "We’ve been in situations...to make an impact," he reflects on the role of faith in his journey.
Looking ahead, Maddux remains focused on sharing his love for music with audiences big or small. He embraces every chance that comes his way while maintaining a flexible outlook on the future: “If it doesn’t pan out...then it’s just a fun thing I get to do in college.”
