Dr. Doug Matthews as the new Division Chair of Christian Ministry | Mount Vernon Nazarene University

Mount Vernon Nazarene University has announced the appointment of Dr. Doug Matthews as the new Division Chair of Christian Ministry, starting July 1, 2025. Dr. Matthews is returning to MVNU with a strong background in theological education and ministry.

Dr. Matthews previously spent over ten years at MVNU in roles such as Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development, professor of Theology and Philosophy, and non-traditional chaplain. During his time there, he was recognized for his effective classroom presence and strategic leadership in student development, even earning the title of Teacher of the Year.

Expressing his enthusiasm about returning to MVNU, Dr. Matthews stated: “Carol (my wife) and I are most joyous, honored, and humbled concerning our returning to MVNU...I’m so grateful and excited concerning this kingdom partnership.”

After leaving MVNU, Dr. Matthews served nearly a decade as Provost and Senior Vice President at Asbury Theological Seminary where he oversaw academic programs and strategic initiatives that contributed to enrollment growth and financial stability.

Most recently, he worked as Executive Pastor of Ministry Development at First Alliance Church in Lexington, Kentucky. He also consulted for various organizations including Asbury Theological Seminary.

MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman remarked on Dr. Matthews' appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Doug Matthews...He brings a wealth of experience and insight to our community.”

In his new role at MVNU, Dr. Matthews will focus on curriculum development, faculty mentoring, church engagement, and advancing a ministry degree program rooted in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition.

Dr. Matthews commented on his new role: “This opportunity is a very welcome...By God’s grace and for God’s glory this could be an incredible season of enhanced ministry preparation at MVNU.”

Dr. Matthews holds advanced degrees from Baylor University, Wheaton College, Spring Arbor University with additional coursework from Nazarene Theological Seminary and Asbury Theological Seminary.
