The City of Mount Vernon will honor fallen veterans with its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 26, 2025. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with U.S. Army Veteran Jim Breault serving as the parade grand marshal.
Mayor Matt Starr emphasized the importance of the day, stating that Memorial Day is a time for solemn reflection rather than celebration. With the theme “We Honor the Fallen,” the event will serve as a heartfelt tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
“Memorial Day is when we pay homage to those veterans who didn’t come home. It’s not a celebration, but a day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom,” Starr said. “And we don’t just mourn the passing of those who gave their lives, we thank God that they lived and had the courage to risk making that sacrifice.”
With a designated route, the parade will begin at the intersection of East High Street and George Street. Participants will march westward before turning south onto South Gay Street, then east onto East Vine Street. It will conclude at the intersection of East Vine and South Park streets, where spectators will gather to honor those who served. About 55 participants have signed up to take part, promising a meaningful display of remembrance and gratitude.
Following the parade, the Memorial Day ceremony will commence at the steps of the Knox Memorial Building. The event will conclude with a rifle salute conducted by AMVETS Post No. 95, honoring the fallen with military precision.
