MVNU honors two professors with Presidential Outstanding Leadership Award

Professor of Biology Dr. Paul Madtes Jr. and Dr. Bob Tocheff, Professor Emeritus of Music at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU), were honored with the Presidential Outstanding Leadership Award during the university's 65th Commencement ceremonies on May 3. This new award was established by MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman to recognize educators who have significantly influenced future leaders.

Dr. Madtes is concluding a 36-year teaching career at MVNU. He holds degrees in Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, and Biblical Counseling from various institutions including Eastern Nazarene College and Texas A&M University. Dr. Castleman praised him as "a remarkable individual — whose commitment to education, faith, and service has left an enduring impact on countless students." Dr. Madtes has received several honors such as the MVNU Recruitment Award and ENC Alumni Achievement Award for his contributions to academia.

Dr. Tocheff graduated from MVNU in 1972 and later earned advanced degrees in Music Education from Olivet Nazarene University, Wright State University, and The Ohio State University. He has been a significant part of the MVNU music program for over four decades, directing groups like the Collegians Chorale since 1991. According to Dr. Castleman, “For over four decades, Dr. Tocheff has been an invaluable member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University family.” His career achievements include receiving accolades like the MVNU Distinguished Alumni award.

Both professors are recognized not only for their academic achievements but also for their dedication to mentoring students throughout their careers.
