Mount Vernon Nazarene University has introduced Virtual Reality (VR) simulation into its nursing curriculum. This initiative aims to provide students with hands-on experiences using advanced technology. The VR tool being utilized is the SimX medical simulation software, compatible with Meta Quest 3 headsets.

Students experience real-life scenarios in a virtual patient room, where they perform various medical tasks. "All the nursing students are being oriented to the VR environment this semester and participating in at least one VR simulation," said Esther Rudolph, Assistant Professor of Nursing. The VR simulations cover a range from basic to complex scenarios, aimed at enhancing decision-making and patient prioritization skills.

This semester, students encounter simulations with patients suffering from conditions like pre-eclampsia, sickle cell anemia, and confusion/UTI, and they assess falls risks. Additional in-class scenarios involve faculty members using the VR headsets while students guide the care processes. These sessions are projected onto classroom screens for interactive learning. Rudolph explained, "We simulated a code experience for the seniors and introduced a basic scenario to the sophomores, both in the classroom setting."

The nursing program at MVNU recognizes the value of VR simulations in preparing students for real-world challenges. "For the seniors, they had the opportunity to care for four patients at one time in the VR setting. They had to prioritize which patient to see first, respond to critical assessment findings, and deal with interruptions within the VR environment that mimicked a hospital unit setting," added Rudolph.

MVNU’s integration of VR simulations reflects its dedication to fostering academic excellence and preparing students for future careers in healthcare.
