Four freshmen from East Knox FFA participated in the Ohio FFA General Livestock Career Development Event (CDE) at the Ohio Exposition Center in Columbus. The team, consisting of Alexia Wine, John Schillinger, Hayden Garman, and Keaton Spence, secured the 165th position out of 200 teams and 1,043 individuals statewide.
The competition involves a written test on general livestock knowledge and market grid questions. Participants also place eight classes of livestock, including beef, swine, sheep, and goats. They answer questions about four placing classes and evaluate keep/cull classes to select breeding females using performance records and visual evaluation.
The top ten teams advance to finals for further judging and oral reasons on each class. The General Livestock CDE aims to teach students to recognize quality production animals, enhancing their skills as livestock producers and consumers by understanding characteristics affecting production and quality.
