With years of experience in baseball and softball, Chuck Shank is embarking on a new chapter as the head coach of the Centerburg High School varsity softball team.
Shank's journey to leading the Trojans began with his own high school baseball career, followed by coaching youth teams ranging from tee-ball to travel ball. After umpiring for 16 years, he transitioned to coaching middle school softball at Big Walnut, where he spent three seasons preparing young athletes for advanced levels. According to Shank, when the varsity coaching position at Centerburg became available, he saw it as an ideal opportunity to advance his coaching career.
"I really enjoyed coaching the players and getting them ready for high school," Shank said. "When the varsity position opened at Centerburg, I applied thinking I was ready for the next step."
Now leading the Trojans, Shank expresses optimism about the upcoming season due to a strong core of players. Despite the team's youth, he notes leadership and potential that could lead to success.
"We have a good core of players this year," Shank said. "We are a young team, but I have three seniors who provide great leadership. If our pitchers can keep the ball in the park, I feel we have a good chance of having a great season."
Among key players this year is senior Abby Herren, committed to Miami of Ohio and described by Shank as one of the hardest-working athletes he has coached. He also highlighted seniors Kayla Ferrell, Harley Webb, and Chesnee Fairall as possessing talent suited for collegiate competition. Additionally, freshman Jazmyn Larimore has shown promise as an emerging talent in the program.
"My motivation is to provide my players with an environment where they enjoy playing the game, learn the fundamentals of softball, and make memories they can look back on years from now," Shank said.
As he begins his first season at Centerburg's helm, Shank emphasizes effort and team growth over comparisons to previous seasons. His primary goal is player improvement and enjoyment of the game, believing that success will naturally follow.
"All I can do is try to get the players to give it their best and have fun playing the game," Shank said. "Hopefully, winning will take care of itself, and we will have a successful season."
With new leadership under Coach Shank and a determined group of players, Centerburg softball anticipates an exciting year ahead.
