The Mount Vernon varsity girls basketball team picked up a hard-fought 50-45 victory over Licking Heights on Wednesday night, improving to 13-4 on the season.
Isla Graham led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points, while Kymber Bell added 14. Maddy Jones contributed 10 as Mount Vernon’s balanced attack helped secure the win.
The Jackets came out strong, establishing an early lead behind their aggressive defense and efficient shooting. Licking Heights responded in the second half, cutting the deficit and keeping the game close in the final minutes. However, Mount Vernon maintained its composure, making key plays down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game,” Mount Vernon head coach Nathan Short said. “Licking Heights is a well-coached team that plays hard. Our girls stepped up and made plays when we needed them most.”
With the postseason approaching, the Jackets are looking to build momentum and improve their seeding for the tournament.
“We’re focusing on getting better each game,” Graham said. “Every game from here on out is important as we prepare for the playoffs.”
Mount Vernon will return to action on 1/29 against Utica, looking to extend its strong run.
