Mount Vernon City Schools has announced its participation in the USDA's Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP). This nationwide initiative is designed to promote healthy eating habits and improve nutrition among students by providing free, nutritious snacks of fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day.
The district successfully applied for a grant to offer this opportunity to all students, highlighting its commitment to student health. The FFVP aims not only to provide access to fresh produce but also to encourage children to expand their knowledge of various fruits and vegetables. Students will have the chance to try items such as grapefruit, snap peas, pineapple, raspberries, and radishes.
"We believe that promoting healthy choices is key to supporting our students' growth and well-being," said district representatives. "We are thrilled to offer this program to enhance their school experience."
To keep families informed, a calendar detailing the fruits and vegetables offered on Wednesdays and Fridays is available on the district’s website under the ‘Lunch Menu’ tab.
Parents and guardians with questions or seeking more information about the program are encouraged to contact the district. This initiative represents a step toward fostering healthier lifestyles for students at Mount Vernon City Schools.
