The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets were defeated by the Newark Wildcats on January 4, with a final score of 66-52 in a challenging and physical contest. This result brings Mount Vernon's record to 5-4, while Newark's improves to 9-1.
According to the game's summary, the teams were tied at halftime. However, the Wildcats gained momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Mount Vernon by 15 points. Despite commendable efforts from the Yellow Jackets, defensive lapses and turnovers allowed Newark to seize control.
"It was a tough, physical game," said Mount Vernon Head Coach Nick Coon. "I am proud of the fight from our players. Unfortunately, we had some defensive breakdowns and too many turnovers in the third quarter in which Newark took advantage of and outscored us by 15 points after being tied at the half. We feel like we can take a lot from this game and hopefully that will springboard us forward as we head back into conference play."
Coon's team saw Zane Barber leading with 18 points and 2 rebounds. Isaiah Columber added 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Quentin Rowland contributed with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. On Newark's side, Jake Quakenbush and Braylon Morris led with 26 and 23 points respectively.
Mount Vernon's next game is scheduled at home against Newark Catholic on Wednesday, January 8. Newark Catholic will bring a challenge as they are coming off a 67-51 win over the Danville Blue Devils.
