Mount Vernon is scheduled to be on the itinerary of the Ohio Poetry Association whistle-stop tour of Underground Railroad stations throughout Ohio.

The Mount Vernon event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5 at First Congregational United Church of Christ and is one of 12 locations on the whistle-stop tour. It will begin at 1:30 p.m. The church is located at 200 N. Main Street, Mount Vernon.

The event is co-sponsored with Poets Against Racism and Hate USA and will present a series of poetry readings at historical sites featuring poets and poems that honor Ohio's legacy on the Underground Railroad. It will also raise awareness of issues of social justice, hate, and prejudice. Members of the Mount Vernon community will speak on local history related to the Underground Railroad and the church's involvement with it.

Becky Chamberlin, First Congregational's moderator, expressed the church's gratitude for the opportunity to host the whistle-stop tour for Central Ohio. We cherish our long history with social justice issues and our experience with the Underground Railroad.
