The Mount Vernon High School Varsity football team fell to Delaware Hayes, 35-0, after being outrushed by 144 yards in the non-conference game at Energy Field in Delaware on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-3 on the year.

The Pacers scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added three more in the second quarter. Four of the scores were on running plays, with one passing play resulting in a touchdown.

Mavrik Gregory was the leading rusher for the Yellow Jackets, with 91 yards on 7 attempts for a 13-yard average. His longest run was for 47 yards.

Quarterback Jake Taylor rushed 10 times to gain 76 yards and a 7.6-yard average. His longest rush nearly matched Gregory’s with 44 yards gained. Dakota Stafford gained 6 yards on 2 rushes.

Taylor threw for more yards than his counterpart from Delaware Hayes, accomplishing that by throwing more passes. He was 8 of 19 for 56 passing yards, with the longest gain by a pass being 21 yards. He suffered one sack for an 11-yard loss in the game.

Anthony Roenker led Mount Vernon’s receiving corps with two passes caught for 32 yards, including that 21-yard gain. Bryce Hollenback gained 15 yards on one pass thrown to him. Luke Hubbard gained 6 yards on one of three passes thrown his way. Taylor also caught a pass to gain 6 yards.

Kicker Hayden Higgins was called on to punt three times. He averaged 15.7 yards per kick.

The Yellow Jackets decided to go for it on fourth down three times, limiting the need for Higgins to kick. They made the first down on two of those attempts. However, their third down efficiency was lower, with only one of six attempts successful.

Both teams had eight possessions on the night.

The Yellow Jackets next play the Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies in an away game at Johnstown. The Johnnies are 2-1 after losing a non-conference game against Granville, 12-48, on Friday night.
