The Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday continues until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8. Mount Vernon City Schools stated that more purchases are eligible this year in the Ohio sales tax holiday.
According to the Ohio Department of Taxation website, all tangible personal property that is $500 or less is eligible. Exceptions include watercraft or outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products, or items that contain marijuana.
Tangible personal property can be seen, weighed, measured, felt, or touched. This includes prewritten computer software, electronics, clothes, home goods, school and office supplies, musical instruments, sports equipment, dine-in food, dietary supplements, pet food, toys, luggage, personal care products, and soft drinks.
The qualification is determined item by item with no limit on the amount of the total purchase. The Ohio Department of Taxation website states that tax is due on the entire selling price if an item sells for more than $500.
The purchase of qualified items by mail, telephone, email, or Internet qualifies for the sales tax exemption if the consumer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment. This applies even if delivery is made after the exemption period.
