Memorial Day parade route | City of Mount Vernon

U.S. Air Force veteran Jack Scott will serve as parade grand marshal for the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

"As with every community across the nation, the City of Mount Vernon has made its fair share of sacrifices through its long, 219-year history to help defend this nation," Mayor Matt Starr said, according to a Mount Vernon press release. "It's altogether fitting and proper that we take a moment – on this May 27, and every Memorial Day – to honor those ultimate sacrifices that have been made."

Starr said approximately 50 participants signed up for the parade, according to a Mount Vernon press release. This year's theme is "We Remember and Honor."

The parade will start from the intersection of East High Street and George Street and head west, according to a Mount Vernon press release. It will then turn south, or left, on South Gay Street before turning east (left) onto East Vine Street. A final turn will have parade participants heading north (left) onto South Park Street, and then heads back to East High Street. The parade "officially" ends at the intersection of East Vine and South Park streets. Participants can head back to the staging area or leave the parade from that point. Participants must arrive at their check-in-staging areas between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.

Knox County Veterans Services Executive Director Keven L. Henthorn will serve as master of ceremonies for a remembrance ceremony from the steps of the Knox Memorial Building, according to a Mount Vernon press release. The building is at 112 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Retired U.S. Army Chaplain Don Wilson will offer the invocation and benediction. Wilson Warner (U.S. Army) of the Veterans Service Commission will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance. That will be followed by Mount Vernon High School student Kale Oswalt singing the national anthem. Wreath placings will come next by the Gold Star Mothers and Knox County Career Center Air Force JROTC to follow.

Henthorn said the program will include paying tribute to those Missing in Action and Prisoners of War with a "Missing Man Table" and honors ceremony, what he said is commonly called the POW-MIA ceremony, according to the Mount Vernon press release. Gary McCutcheon will perform "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. AMVETS Post No. 95 representatives will offer a rifle salute. A Mount Vernon High School trumpeter will close out the ceremony with a performance of "Taps."
