Mount Vernon News Athlete of the Week: Payton VanSickle

Sports

Loudonville senior Payton VanSickle drove in 15 runs and homered last week for the high powered Redbird offense, and her production at the plate earned her the Mount Vernon News Athlete of the Week Award.

Loudonville softball started off the week with a 23-1 win over Central Christian on April 15, and VanSickle went 1-for-2 with two walks, five RBIs and two runs to lead the offensive surge. The next day they faced Central Christian again, and this time came away with a 19-0 win. VanSickle was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, four RBIs and two runs.

On April 19 they took on Lebanon, and while the Redbirds took an 11-6 loss, VanSickle knocked a double, drove in a run and came around to score. She was also a bright spot in a 10-6 loss to Ontario the same day, where she went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. She also stole three bases in the game.

VanSickle finished out the week with a 2-for-4 day in a 12-2 win over Ashland on April 20, smashing a homer and driving in four runs, while scoring one. She and her teammate Kate Burgess, who also put up big numbers all week, combined for nine RBIs, four runs scored and went 5-for-7 at the plate.

VanSickle picked up where she left off last week in a 19-3 win over South Central, where the senior catcher went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Once again, the combination of she and Burgess was huge, as they combined to go 6-for-7 with six RBIs and seven runs scored.

Congratulations to Payton VanSickle and good luck the rest of the week!
