Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Academic Summer Camps provide high school students a hands-on opportunity to experience college life in the classroom and across campus. | MVNU

Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) is inviting high school students to experience college life as residential students through its Academic Summer Camps. The camps, scheduled for the summer of 2024, are open to students who will be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year in the fall.

"The camps provide the students with a hands-on, focused introduction to specific fields of study led by approachable, engaging faculty with expertise in the various fields," said LeeAnn Couts, dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences and camp director, according to an MVNU press release. "Such an experience helps students discern their appropriate career path, builds their self-confidence, and increases the likelihood that they will attend college. It is also a lot of fun!"

According to another MVNU press release, high school students will have the opportunity to work with faculty in their area of interest and experience campus life. They will also participate in evening excursions both on and off-campus. Past activities have included glow bowling, miniature golfing, video gaming, and go-kart riding.

The same press release reveals that hands-on experience will be offered in nine different academic and career fields including pre-med, science exploration, worship arts, psychology, art and design, education, engineering, film production, and nursing.

The camps are limited to the first 24 students who register and submit payment. However, there are exceptions for film production which is limited to 16 students and pre-med which is capped at 20 students. Registration costs $495 per person which includes academic sessions and labs, meals, overnight accommodations as well as campus experiences. Additional fees may apply for CPR training/certification along with bedding and towel rental. For county residents with financial needs scholarship support has been provided by The Knox County Foundation. Applications can be found at mvnu.edu/summer-camp.
