The Salvation Army of Mount Vernon has requested the city's approval for variances that would facilitate the construction of a 12,240-square-foot daycare building. Adhering to existing setbacks would restrict the size of the proposed structure.

The Mount Vernon Board of Zoning Appeals, which convenes on the first and third Wednesdays of every month, is comprised of seven appointed members. These include Chairman Michael Percy, Vice Chairman Tonya Boucher, and members Susie Simpson, William Smith, Cynthia Cunningham, Otho Eyster, and Kate Aryanata.

According to the board's agenda for its February 21 meeting, the daycare project has sought variances from the Mount Vernon Board of Zoning Appeals for building setbacks, parking setbacks, and parking stall width requirements.

If the existing setbacks are adhered to for the proposed daycare facility, its size would be reduced to approximately 7,250 square feet. The board's agenda for its February 21 meeting indicates that such a reduction in size would render it impossible to accommodate the required program within the building.

As per information from the board's agenda for its February 21 meeting, it is noteworthy that current structures on the property do not conform to existing setback regulations.
