The Glenbard South girls’ basketball team (7-4, 6-0) won two out of three games last week, with the two wins being over Upstate Eight rivals Aurora East and Elgin to keep the Raiders perfect in conference play.
On Dec. 12 the Raiders dominated the Aurora East Tomcats (1-9, 0-6) 53-7. Glenbard South was up 2-0 and the Tomcats were trying to tie things up but Jamie Mizwicki thought otherwise with a steal near their basket. The Raiders were up 6-0 when Brooklynn Moore snagged a pass for a steal. Glenbard South tacked on another three points, and the Tomcats couldn’t get a break on offense as Callie Hardtke was able to come away with another steal for the Raiders. Moore grabbed her second steal of the night at the end of the quarter, and then took it all the way to the hoop to go up 11-0.
In the second quarter Moore had another steal that she turned into a fast break score to go up 17-1.
It was a 25-1 game in the third quarter, and the Raiders continued their stifling defense with a Sofia Alcala block.
By the fourth quarter Glenbard South was up 48-7 and Brooke Buenafe put them up by 44 points on a three. They tacked on two more points before the game ended, finishing off a crushing conference win.
Glenbard South led 57-24 in rebounds, 7-2 in assists, 13-5 in steals and 31% to 7% in shooting. Moore led the charge with a double-double line of 12 points and 13 boards. Mizwicki had three steals in the win, while Sofia Alcala and Rheayanna Ferguson had two steals.
On Dec. 13 the Raiders traveled to Hinsdale South (11-3, 4-1) and suffered a 42-19 loss. Glenbard South shot only 19% and didn’t make a three. They were out-rebounded 34-26 and trailed 11-5 in assists, 11-3 in steals and 4-2 in blocks.
“Hinsdale South came out with a level of intensity we were unable to match,” said Coach Eric Daca. “Their aggressiveness on defense made it tough for us to get many good looks, and when we did, we weren't able to hit the shots.”
The Raiders bounced back with a 60-36 win at Elgin (6-5, 2-4) on Dec. 15. Moore led the charge with 16 points and Mizwicki had 13 points.
