Zac Clow drove in four runs on two hits to lead Mount Vernon to a 14-0 shutout of Utica in high school baseball action Wednesday. Clow tripled in the second inning, driving in three runs, and added an RBI single in the first to help fuel the Yellow Jackets’ offensive surge.
According to reports, Mount Vernon opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles. Nolan Hershberger delivered the first blow with a two-run single. The Jackets added five more runs in the second on three hits. Clow’s triple cleared the bases, while Hayden Higgins added an RBI single and another run scored on a Utica error.
Mount Vernon continued to increase their lead in the third inning, taking advantage of another error and a sacrifice fly by Dammon Wolfe. Jagger Dohn earned the win for Mount Vernon, pitching two hitless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Jaxson Riggs took the loss for Utica, allowing eight runs — six earned — on seven hits over 1 2/3 innings.
Relievers Cam Firebaugh and Caden Theibert combined efforts to shut down Utica for the remainder of the game. The Jackets totaled 13 hits, with Kayden Packard leading by going 3-for-4. Hershberger and Ezra Kurek each had multiple hits.
Aidyn Burgess recorded Utica’s lone hit, going 1-for-3. The win marked a milestone for Mount Vernon head coach Nate Hunt, who notched his 100th career victory. Mount Vernon is set to travel to face Licking Valley on Thursday.
