The Knox County Board of Commissioners has been informed that the county will not be required to store batteries dropped off for recycling.

Matthew Baugher, the Knox County Litter and Recycling Coordinator, stated that Accurate IT had pledged to collect the batteries left for recycling in the bin located in the Service Center lobby on a monthly basis. The cost of this service is set at 82 cents per pound, according to the minutes from the Knox County Commission's meeting held on December 5.

Baugher provided a routine department update to the commissioners during their meeting on December 5. He mentioned that the county's string lights recycling program commenced in the first week of December. These lights can be deposited at several locations including Mount Vernon Public Library, City Hall, and the Knox County Service Center lobby. Baugher added that Accurate IT would also collect these items simultaneously with battery pick-ups.

In his report to the commissioners, Baugher noted that a letter was being prepared for apartment complexes within city limits. This communication aims to inform staff and tenants that even though they are not eligible for free curbside recycling, they have access to community recycle bins at Opportunity Knox.

According to Baugher's update during the Dec. 5 meeting, The Knox County Litter and Recycling Department successfully completed K-6 programming at East Knox in November. The program emphasized deforestation and biodiversity issues. Baugher also shared his ongoing collaboration with Mount Vernon High School Sustainability Club and disclosed his recent involvement in giving recycling presentations at the Knox County Career Center.
