The Knox County Commissioners have approved the application of Small's Sand and Gravel of Gambier to obtain a Chief's Order from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, permitting them to spread brine on aggregate piles.
According to the minutes from the Knox County Commission's meeting on Dec. 5, salt brine is utilized to treat No. 9 gravel for use in snow and ice control. The treated gravel is then distributed on township and county roads.
The commission's minutes also reveal that a public hearing was advertised and conducted regarding the resolution to approve the salt brine application. The application, along with the commission's resolution, are now being forwarded to the Division of Oil and Gas at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) for their approval.
The same source indicates that any stored salt brine must comply with regulations stipulated in the Ohio Revised Code.
