"Bus Red-Light Violators Caught on Camera"

Statement by Todd Conant, Transportation Director

"The safety of children around school buses is a shared responsibility." ~ A Fact

It perplexes me why some drivers prioritize reaching their destination quickly over ensuring the safety of children. Our dedicated team of 23 full-time bus drivers covers 2,050 miles daily, focusing on the safety of elementary and secondary school students during their morning pickups and afternoon drop-offs. Safety is their foremost concern.

Regrettably, we've been noticing an average of 10 red-light violations per week, where drivers pass our buses despite the flashing red lights. Even one such instance poses a significant danger. In response, all Mount Vernon City School buses are now equipped with multiple exterior and interior cameras, including a system that activates when a vehicle violates the red-light safety protocol. This captures crucial details such as the violating car's make, model, color, and license plate, providing essential evidence for enforcement.

The collected footage is swiftly transmitted to my office computer, ready for immediate action by the Highway Patrol to identify and address violators. In alignment with National School Bus Safety Week discussions last year, the Mount Vernon Law Director's Office recommends a minimum fine of $100 for those convicted of red-light violations, with the potential for higher penalties based on case reviews. Furthermore, Ohio Revised Code allows for the suspension of a driver's license when deemed necessary.

From my observations, drivers typically fall into three categories:

1) Those who responsibly slow down at a bus's flashing yellow lights and come to a complete stop when they turn red.

2) Those who prioritize their schedule over safety, disregarding the rules.

3) Those who might be unaware of Ohio laws pertaining to school buses.

Our fleet of 23 regularly used buses, along with seven in reserve, undergo meticulous maintenance and biannual inspections by the Highway Patrol. Our drivers, trained and certified, diligently follow safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all passengers.

There's nothing more critical than safeguarding a child's welfare. My message to all is simple: Whenever you see a school bus, assume children are present and act accordingly.
