Mount Vernon, Ohio has announced the hiring of Tanner Salyers as its new Safety Service Director, according to a news release from the city. Salyers, who currently serves as the Knox County Recorder, will assume his new role on October 16th.

Salyers brings a wealth of experience to the position. Prior to serving as Knox County Recorder, he was a member of the Mount Vernon City Council from 2019 to 2021. He also currently serves as the city's recreation director. Mayor Matthew Starr praised Salyers, stating, "Tanner is a self-starter and is someone who does his homework before making a decision. He’s a creative problem solver and understands what we’re trying to accomplish in the city through modernizing our structure and services to the public."

Salyers will be taking over the role of Safety Service Director from Rick Dzik, who resigned from the position in September after accepting a job as city manager in Huber Heights, Ohio. Dzik had been in the role since December 2019.

Salyers' previous experience on the Mount Vernon City Council will be an asset in his new position, as it has given him an understanding of the legislative side of government. He has also overseen a departmental budget at the County Recorder's office and has knowledge of the legislative process at the state level. Mayor Starr emphasized Salyers' connections in Columbus and Washington, D.C.

In a statement, Salyers expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to Mount Vernon's growth and development. "The City of Mount Vernon is experiencing an exciting time for its people and its government. We have an opportunity for smart growth and smart development," he said.

Salyers is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Kent State University, holding a Master's Degree in Public Administration.

As the new Safety Service Director, Salyers will be responsible for overseeing various departments related to public safety and public services in Mount Vernon. With his experience and qualifications, he is poised to make a positive impact on the city's future.
