The Mount Vernon City Council is set to vote on pay raises for elected officials during its meeting on October 9th. Prior to the meeting, an Employee and Community Relations Committee meeting will be held. The proposed ordinance includes salary increases for various elected positions, including the City Council president and council members, the mayor, the auditor, and the law director. The legislation is being considered an emergency measure to ensure the salaries are set before the November 2023 general election.

According to the minutes of the September 26th meeting, the salary scale for elected officials is outlined in the ordinance. If approved, salaries for the City Council president and its members would increase to $9,059 in 2024 and up to $9,218 in 2025. The mayor's salary would see incremental increases from $85,000 in 2024 to $92,882 in 2027. The auditor's pay would increase from $80,000 in 2024 to $84,872 in 2027. The law director's salary would also see an increase, starting at $117,000 in 2024 and reaching $127,774 in 2027.

The emergency nature of the legislation means that it requires an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the City Council to take effect immediately. This urgency is to ensure that the salaries are set before the next general election in November 2023.

The Mount Vernon City Council's vote on salary increases for elected officials will be a key topic of discussion during the upcoming meeting on October 9th. If approved, these raises would go into effect in the coming years, providing increased compensation for the City Council president, council members, mayor, auditor, and law director.
