OCC High school volleyball roundup: Wooster and Lexington continue dominance, Mount Vernon wins fourth straight and West Holmes snaps losing streak

In high school volleyball action, Wooster continues their undefeated season with a commanding 3-0 win over Ashland, Lexington secures a victory over New Philadelphia with Ava Brown leading the way, Mount Vernon wins four straight matches against Madison Comprehensive, and West Holmes snaps a seven-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Mansfield Senior.

Wooster 2, Ashland 0

Wooster (10-0, 7-0) have been unstoppable this season, and that continued against OCC foe Ashland in a 3-0 sweep victory on Tuesday for their 10th straight win.

Wooster came out of the gate hot with a 25-14 win in the first set. The Arrows made it closer in set two but the Generals still followed with a 25-19 win. Wooster finished off Ashland in the third set in convincing fashion, with a score of 25-13. Wooster has only lost two sets all season.

Ashland was led by Lillian Pool, who had seven kills and nine digs. Jenna Hartson recorded 16 assists. Vivian Walter was the team’s top server with two aces. Emma Valentine had 16 digs for the Arrows.

Individual statistics for Wooster were unavailable at press time.

Lexington 3, New Philadelphia 0

Lexington (8-2, 5-2) has been red hot with five straight wins, and on Tuesday the Minutemen swept New Philadelphia (5-4, 4-3) with Ava Brown piling on kills and assists in the win.

The first set was tied at 7-7 when Sidney Vandall broke the tie for New Philadelphia to take the lead. Then tied at 8-8, Lexington’s Bella Temple recorded a kill to give the Minutemen a one-point advantage. She also gave them a 10-9 lead on a block/kill. Lexington had a 16-14 advantage, but Kallyn Perks of the Quakers served an ace to cut the lead to one. 

Tied 16-16, Kylie Thornton put up a kill to put Lexington up one point. The game was tied again at 18-18, and Vandall gave the Quakers a one-point lead on a kill. Ava Riesen gave the Quakers a 25-24 lead on a kill. Ava Brown made it a 26-25 game in favor of the Minutemen, and this one went down to the wire, with Lexington taking a 27-25 win.

New Philadelphia came back to win 25-17 in set two, where New Philadelphia controlled most of the match. Perks broke a 4-4 tie with an ace and Sarah Ciereszewski had an ace to go up 15-9. Perks put the Quakers up 17-12 and Riesen had the set-winning kill.

The third and fourth sets were all Lexington, who won 25-13 and 25-17 respectively. In the third set, Savannah Wolf had an ace, while Lehnart and Temple had blocks. In the fourth set, Tatum Stover had an ace of her own to take the set win.

Brown led the Minutemen with 25 kills, 20 assists and five blocks in the win. Stover was also a force on both offense and defense, tallying 20 kills and 32 digs. Temple did a great job setting them up with 32 assists, but also got in on the scoring action with eight kills and a pair of aces. Jenna Lehnart led the team in the blocks department with seven.

Mount Vernon 3, Madison Comprehensive 0

The Mount Vernon volleyball team (10-2, 6-1) has won four straight matches after blanking Madison Comprehensive (3-7, 2-4) on Monday in Ohio Cardinal Conference action.

The Yellow Jackets took a 25-19 win in set one and followed with wins of 25-18 and 25-22 in sets two and three. The win put Mount Vernon at second in the OCC behind undefeated Wooster.

Mount Vernon was led by Tori Burdette, who had 29 assists, five kills and 13 digs in the match. Emma Dean recorded 11 kills and one ace. Audrey Stuller delivered on defense with 21 digs to go with an ace. Kaitlyn Thompson posted nine kills and four digs, while Jurnie Gleason put up 10 digs. Ady Beaver and Avery Lasater each added nine digs apiece.

Maddie Berry had 11 assists, seven kills and 12 digs for Madison Comprehensive, while Cielo Jacobus and Addy Farris had six kills each. Jacobus had two aces, two blocks and 14 digs. Olivia Barley had 12 digs in the match.

West Holmes 3, Mansfield Senior 1

West Holmes (2-9, 1-6) snapped a seven-game losing streak and handed Mansfield Senior (0-12, 0-6) their 20th straight loss dating back to last season with a 3-1 win for the Knights on Tuesday night in OCC action.

Mansfield Senior came out on a vengeance in the first set with hopes of turning things around, beating West Holmes 25-19 in set one. The Tygers, however, couldn’t keep the momentum in the match, and West Holmes went on to win 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20.
