Exploring the outdoors, breeding rabbits and preparing a healthful snack were topics of demonstrations given by members of Mount Vernon’s Clever Clovers 4-H Club at their May 15 and June 5 meetings.

Both meetings were called to order at 6:30 p.m. at the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. The Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge were led by Hunter Gutheil on May 15 and by Treasurer Jasper Bruff and Reagan Stump on June 5. Secretary Phoebe Hults called roll and minutes of previous meetings were approved as written. Bruff reported on club finances.

On May 15, Gutheil talked about hiking in Hocking Hills State Park. He described Old Man’s Cave, waterfalls, giant rocks and other natural and manmade features he observed for his project “Explore the Outdoors.”

On June 5, Lilly Schlairet outlined the production cycle of breeder rabbits. She showed a diagram of the rabbits’ anatomy and discussed various characteristics of these market animals, including their specialized “hind-gut” digestive system, gestational development and territorial temperament.

Also on June 5, Bruff demonstrated how to make confetti salsa with corn and black beans for his project “Snack Attack.” Club members got to sample Bruff’s cooking, and all received a copy of his recipe.

Safety Officer Neveah Webster gave a talk at each meeting on handling animals: Chickens on May 15 and dogs on June 5.

Members were reminded to register for Junior Fair on June 9. The Clever Clovers’ next meeting was on June 19.
