MOUNT VERNON – Walk near any Knox Educational Service Center (ESC) Preschool classroom and listen.

You may hear the alphabet or counting chanted in unison, the same for the days of the week and the months of the year. You may hear singing or laughter – lots of laughter.

Sometimes it will be quiet. It might be story time. Or children may be learning to respect their peers through games that teach sharing and taking turns. They may be learning how to print their names. Overall, they are preparing for a successful start in kindergarten.

“My child has learned so much already," a parent said on in comment on a recent survey conducted by the preschool. "It’s fantastic that there’s such an emphasis on learning even beyond the basics, and in a fun way.”

Enrollment for the 2023-24 school year is underway. Children are eligible if they will be 3 years old, and less than 5 by Aug. 1. Tuition is based on household income.

The preschool offers half-day classes – morning or afternoon, Monday through Thursday – in Mount Vernon, Centerburg, East Knox and Fredericktown.

“Our program is centered on play-based learning,” Jackie Nutt, preschool director, said. “Extensive research has shown that children learn best through play that focuses on a child’s individual development. And structured play develops gross motor skills.”

All classrooms are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education and staffed by certified early childhood teaching professionals. In addition, each teacher has an assistant teacher.

Children with special needs are served through a special-education program that addresses physical or cognitive development, communication or social/emotional development, or adaptive behavior.

“In-depth screening and discussions with parents determine the specific needs of students so that we can develop a plan for success,” Nutt said. “We offer smaller class sizes and close attention to the progress of each child. “Supporting our parents and maintaining close collaboration with them is key throughout the year.”

Close contact with parents was cited by another survey respondent who wrote: “I feel better supported as a parent of kids with additional needs and feel that the school and teachers are perfectly tailored to my children.”

Knox ESC Preschool has earned a Five-Star Step Up To Quality rating from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The rating recognizes programs that meet quality standards that exceed licensing health and safety regulations.
