Jackets swim and dive team competes at OCCC Championships

The Mount Vernon High School swim and dive team will compete at the Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28-29 in Gambier. Under the guidance of coach Steve Sant, the Jackets have been practicing at Kenyon College in preparation for the meet. Several Jackets are coming off solid performances at the Viking Classic, Jan. 7 in Gambier.

Those who finished well at the Viking Classic on the men's team include: Thomas Sant – second in the 200-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100 free; Landon Rush – third in the 100 butterfly; Collin McFarlane – 11th in the 200 individual medley and 11th in the 100 backstroke and Andrew Conway – 12th in the 100 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay team of Sant, Conway, Rush and McFarlane finished third.

Among the Mount Vernon women who finished well at the Viking Classic were Claire Clarkson – sixth in the 100-yard backstroke and ninth in the 200 individual medley; Olivia Wiley – 11th in the 100 breaststroke; Lucy Rush – seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle and 10th in the 200 individual medley; Julie King – 11th in the 100 backstroke and 16th in the 100 butterfly; Rylee Jarosz – 13th in the 200 free and 16th in the 100 butterfly and Sala Glandon – 14th in the 100 butterfly.

Mount Vernon athlete trains in South Korea for Youth Olympic Games

Four USA luge athletes from Ohio will be departing from John Glenn Columbus International Airport Friday morning for South Korea, where they will spend 16 days training in advance of next year’s Youth Olympic Games. One of the lugers, Maggie Richardson, is from Mount Vernon. The athletes are members of the USA Luge Junior “C” Team. While their long-term goals may include the Junior National, National and Olympic teams, the focus of this trip is preparation for the Youth Olympic Games, which will take place between Jan. 19 and Feb. 1, 2024.

The four luge athletes will compete in women’s doubles and include Richardson of Mount Vernon, Goldie Miller of Englewood, Haiden Bunker of West Farmington and Adeline Albert of Worthington. The four athletes were discovered at the White Castle USA Luge Slider Search in Columbus. The Slider Search uses wheeled sleds to identify talented youngsters for the sport. The tour plans to return to Columbus in mid-May of this year.

Knox Babe Ruth League begins registration

The 2023 Knox Babe Ruth League will begin play in March and registration for athletes starts Feb. 21 at the announcers’ booth at the Babe Ruth Field at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue.

The league is for 13-16-year-olds and play is scheduled to start after high school players have finished with their school programs.

Opening day will be on a Saturday to be determined, and the season will operate on weekdays that are to be determined and will culminate in a city tournament to crown a tournament champion in addition to the regular season champ.

In-person Knox Babe Ruth League registration will take place on the following dates:

Saturday, Feb. 11, Noon-2 p.m.

Friday, Feb 17, 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 25, Noon-2 p.m.

Thursday, March 2, 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, March 11, Noon-2 p.m.

Wednesday, March 15, 6-8 p.m.

New player tryouts and evaluations will take place on a date and time to be determined.
