Four from East Knox Local Schools qualify for Knox County Spelling Bee

HOWARD – Four students from East Knox Local Schools have qualified for the Knox County Spelling Bee at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Mount Vernon High School auditorium.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome.

The auditorium is a change of location from the Mount Vernon Middle School library, which earlier had been announced as the site.

At East Knox, Callie May emerged as the fifth-grade winner after six rounds by successfully spelling “benefitted.” Angelynn Kauila-Volk was the runner-up.

Lucas Colopy earned the sixth-grade title, correctly spelling “acrid” after 12 rounds. Kayli Stamper was the runner-up.

The seventh-grade champion was Julia McNeely, who spelled “benefitted” to win after 10 rounds. Rhyan Williams was runner-up.

After six rounds, Joshua Hitchcock emerged as the eighth-grade winner by correctly spelling “defunct.” Ava Page was runner-up.

The Knox Educational Service Center facilitates the county bee with financial support from the Mount Vernon Rotary Club.

Taylor Gingery, the ESC’s gifted and talented coordinator, will be the pronouncer. The Knox County Commissioners will serve as judges.
