Four students from Danville Local Schools to compete in January spelling bee

DANVILLE – Four students from Danville Local Schools have qualified to participate in the annual Knox County Spelling Bee on Jan. 12 in the Mount Vernon High School auditorium.

The 7 p.m. program will be open to the public.

The Knox Educational Service Center facilitates the county bee with support from the Mount Vernon Rotary Club, which provides trophies, certificates, participant T-shirts and refreshments.

At Danville, James Malone emerged as the fifth-grade winner by correctly spelling “hauling” after 14 rounds. Michael Byers was the runner-up.

The sixth-grade title went to Natalie Cozza in the 10th round when she spelled “Angola.” Stella Brecheisen was runner-up.

Kaden Sanders was the seventh-grade champion. He spelled “ceiling” to win after seven rounds. Nicholas Mosher was the runner-up.

Nevaeh Aldrich claimed the eighth-grade title, correctly spelling “retribution” in the 11th round. Savannah Morgan was runner-up.

The Knox bee in January also will include grade-level champions from Centerburg, East Knox, Fredericktown and Mount Vernon public schools.

Taylor Gingery, ESC gifted and talented coordinator, serves as pronouncer at the schools’ spelling bees. She also will be the pronouncer at the Knox County Bee, which will feature the Knox County commissioners as judges.
