To the Editor:
As Americans, we value our freedoms, we believe in the rule of law, and we expect our government to serve the public good. In a functional democracy, people of all backgrounds can provide for their families and live in communities that welcome different political beliefs.
Republican leaders continue to stir division and stoke fear through intimidation, bullying, threatening and lying to the American people about voter fraud. When respected GOP leaders break the law, they embolden others to do the same. I was shocked and deeply saddened this past week when several neighbors said that they were afraid they might be harassed if they put out a political sign supporting local Democratic candidates. Harassing others who have different opinions is a prequel to violence. This is evident in the violent attack on our Capitol and family members of politicians as well as threats of violence against election workers.
I encourage you to vote for Democrats who will work to uphold the rule of law and continue to fight for the basic rights of the American people this November. Democracies are preserved and rights are won when people come together to make their voices heard. Together we can vote to protect democracy on Nov. 8.
