To the Editor:
Thank you to Patrick and Mary Ann Kent, who responded with courtesy to a prior letter to the editor regarding abortion. They rightfully point out values shared by most of us – every human being has human dignity, and we value human life.
The Kents, however, propose that science confirms full humanity at conception. We all understand that there is the potential for human life at conception. However, it is beyond the scope of science to define when human life begins. This is a question that can only be answered by religious teachings or other values.
Further, different religions have widely different teachings about when human life begins. These beliefs range from conception to viability to first breath. Thus, when politicians pass laws based on a religious belief that human life begins at conception, we are allowing our government to impose a specific religious belief on others whether they share this belief or not.
We have the opportunity in the upcoming election to demonstrate the value we place on human life. Vote for Democrats like Nan Whaley and Tim Ryan, who are pro-choice and pro-life. They honor human dignity by trusting and respecting the decisions of women and their families to make the best choices for their families. They also understand that being pro-life means advocating for community supports that ensure safety and opportunity for all children, from birth to adulthood. We can all come together to honor human life and do our part to build these nurturing communities for our children.
