MOUNT VERNON – Knox Public Health will conduct a walk-in clinic offering the latest COVID booster and a seasonal influenza vaccine on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mount Vernon Energy Field House, 101 Yellow Jacket Drive.
Both the Pfizer and Moderna boosters will be available at the Field House clinic. The flu vaccine offered will be standard flu vaccine, not high-dose. Both vaccines can be given at the same time, or clinic attendees can receive only one and get the other at another time.
Knox Public Health recommends that everyone who is eligible get an updated booster dose at least 2 months after their last COVID-19 shot – either since their last booster dose, or since completing their primary series. Pfizer’s updated booster shot is recommended for individuals 12 and older, and Moderna’s updated booster shot is recommended for adults 18 and older.
The new boosters contain an updated bivalent formula that boosts immunity against the original coronavirus strain and also protects against the newer Omicron variants that account for most of the current cases. Updated boosters are intended to provide optimal protection against the virus and address waning vaccine effectiveness over time.
Eligible individuals can get either the Pfizer or Moderna updated booster, regardless of whether their primary series or most recent dose was with Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax, or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
There is no out-of-pocket cost for the bivalent booster. Medicaid, Medicare and most forms of insurance will be accepted as payment for the flu vaccine. Otherwise, the cost for flu vaccine is $35 and can be paid in cash or by check. Clinic attendees need to bring a photo ID and medical/insurance card.
