MOUNT VERNON – With family by her side, Emily Grace Lindsey, 88, of Mount Vernon peacefully joined her heavenly Father on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.
Emily was born in Stann Creek, British Honduras (now Dangriga, Belize) on April 15, 1934, to the late Francisco and Emelia (Ogaldez) Ciego. Following her high school graduation from St. Catherine’s Academy in April 1954, Emily received a scholarship to study nursing in the United States. After leaving her home in Stann Creek, she traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, before ending in Huntington, West Virginia. She attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse in 1957. She met her husband of 38 years, Moses “Billy” Lindsey, in Huntington, West Virginia.
Together, Emily, Moses and their young family moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio, in 1962 where they created their new home. Here, she continued building a rewarding career in nursing. Among her numerous accolades, Emily was a member of the Knox County Nurses Society; the head nurse at Mercy Hospital, where she played an integral role in the opening of the first Coronary Intensive Care Unit; and president of the Knox County Branch of the American Heart Association. Emily spent many hours caring for and ministering to the public. She was described by her patients as a very caring, kind-hearted person who always had time for everyone and gave shots that did not hurt. Emily spent the majority of her nursing career working for Dr. James Carhart. After 40 years in the nursing profession, Emily retired in November 1997. Emily was a devout member of St Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister of the Holy Communion. She loved serving her community and her church in various ways. Unseen by most, Emily selflessly touched many lives. She enjoyed quilting and going to dinner with her friends. Her ambitious and adventurous nature was satisfied by being an avid traveler. A few of her favorite destinations included Guam, Hawaii, Rome, and her home country of Belize. The greatest joy in Emily’s later years were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Emily is survived by her children, Victor Lindsey (Stephanie Hall), Constance Lindsey, James (Sue) Lindsey, and Grace (Derrick) Edmond; grandchildren, Natasha Campbell, Jasmyn (Jason) Diedrich, Megan (Evan) Jurecki, Azzuredee (Joshua) Hall, Mariah (Devin) Haywood, Thoren Lindsey, Derrick “DJ” (Nicole) Edmond II, Erin (Calvin) Moten, Ashley Edmond, and Dolcé Lindsey; great grandchildren, Nastassja, Chazz, Joclyn, Tavin, Realyn, Cadence, Grayson, Willow, Kal, Raleigh, Warren, and Orion Jade; her half-brother, Simon Ferguson; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles, and her former husband, Moses Lindsey.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Flowers Chapel. A prayer service will follow the visitation.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Mount Vernon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Chapter of the American Heart Association in Emily’s memory.
