Mount Gilead 42, Elgin 6

The Indians came out hot in the first quarter on Sept. 2, going up 14-0 with a 9-yard touchdown run by Matt Bland and a 32-yard touchdown pass from Bland to Owen High. Elgin had its one score in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run by Quentin Harris, but High caught another touchdown from Bland, this time for 44 yards. A two-point conversion made it a 22-6 game at halftime.

In the third quarter, Bland scored on a 50-yard touchdown run, and Garrett George had a 3-yard touchdown run as well. George added a 7-yard score on the ground in the fourth quarter.

Mount Gilead dominated the yardage, 479 to 169. Bland went 6-for-10 passing with 115 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was a force on the ground with 17 carries for 151 yards. George was the most dominant rusher with 25 carries for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Owen High was the top receiver with three catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Looking to build on the win, the Indians (2-1) took on Loudonville at home on Sept. 9.

Crestview 37, Highland 17

The Highland Scots fell to 1-2 on Sept. 2 after a game in which they trailed from the start in a 37-17 loss to undefeated Crestview.

It was a 3-0 game in favor of Crestview after one quarter, but the floodgates opened for Crestview as it outscored Highland 21-3 in the second quarter and 13-7 in the third quarter. Highland scored seven points in the fourth, but the deficit was too great to mount a comeback.

Scots quarterback Kolton Stover was 5-for-11 passing for 89 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Dane Nauman was the top running back on the day with 19 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Chandler Davis also had a solid game on the ground with six rushes for 63 yards. Zach Schmidt had a pair of catches for 75 yards, including a touchdown.

The Fighting Scots looked to get back into the winning column on Sept. 9 with a conference matchup on the road against Ontario.

North Union 28, Danville 0

The Blue Devils were held scoreless in a 28-0 loss to North Union, Sept. 2, falling to 2-1.

North Union scored a touchdown in each quarter against Danville.

Walker Weckesser went 5-for-13 passing for 23 yards and a pair of interceptions for Danville. Leading the Blue Devils' rushing attack was Max Payne, with 11 carries for 38 yards. Caleb Lucas had two catches for seven yards.

Defensively, Payne finished with 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Dillon Looney had a sack and three tackles, and also blocked a field goal. Bryer Boeshart had one interception and 15 tackles. Peyton Horn had 10 tackles. Caleb Lucas caused a fumble, and Gavyn Lepley had a fumble recovery.

Danville next faced Fredericktown on Sept. 9  for a home conference matchup.

Hayes 45, Mount Vernon 10

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets had a tough time generating ball control in a 45-10 loss Sept. 2 in which they turned the ball over five times. The Yellow Jackets fell to 1-2 in the loss.

Mount Vernon got on the board first with a 33-yard field goal to make it 3-0, but the Jackets quickly found themselves behind 21-3 after Hayes scored on two first-quarter touchdown passes and a touchdown in the second quarter. Mount Vernon scored its lone touchdown on a Joel Hubbard pass to Jonny Askew. Hayes scored a touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter, a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter.

Hubbard went 8-for-20 for 109 yards, a touchdown and three picks. Leading the Jackets' ground attack was Ayden Kennedy, who had two runs for 20 yards, including one for 16 yards. Askew had four catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Drew Mundy had the longest catch of the day for MV at 43 yards for his only reception.

Mount Vernon went on the road to play Lexington on Sept. 9.
