Danville begins with 3-1 win over Central Christian 

Danville got off to a winning start in the 2022 volleyball season with a pair of wins in two days, starting with a 3-1 win over Central Christian on Aug. 22 by a count of 25-20, 17-25, 25-12, 25-16.

Taryn Mickley and Shy Thomas had six kills each and Kenzie Neitzelt and Tessa Ferenbaugh had four each. Leigh Johnson and Mickley each recorded 17 digs, Neitzelt had 13, and Sophie Snively and Ferenbaugh each delivered 12.

Danville followed up the following day, increasing their record to 2-0 with a 3-0 conference victory over Mount Gilead (0-2, 0-1) on Aug. 23. The set scores were 25-20, 25-20, 26-24. Mickley led the Blue Devils with nine kills, while Johnson’s 14 digs and Shelby Colopy’s 10 digs kept Danville in control. Neitzelt (nine assists) and Mickley (eight assists) were pivotal assets near the net.

 Highland wins marathon set, downs St. Francis DeSales 3-0

The Scots opened their home 2022 season with a 25-16, 33-31, 25-16 sweep over St. Francis DeSales on Aug. 23. The Varsity Scots (2-0) opened the first set with an 8-2 run and forced an SFD timeout after an ace by Zoya Winkelfoos. Brooke Schott had a kill to make it 20-14 and force another SFD timeout. Schott scored with a final kill to close out set one. The Scots trailed 6-1 in set two, but they battled back and tied it at 13-13 all with a kill by Kameron Stover. An ace by Larsen Terrill stretched the lead to 17-14 and SFD had to call a timeout. The Scots held game point at 24-21, but DeSales wouldn't go away and tied the set at 24. The two teams battled point for point until the Scots pulled away with a Stover kill to end the 33-31 marathon set. The Scots had 16 kills in the set. The third set saw the Scots take a 6-2 start. After an SFD timeout at 16-11, the Scots continued to pull away to win the match.

Larsen Terrill posted 12 kills and two aces for Highland. Kameron Stover added nine kills and three service aces, Brooke Schott had eight kills and three aces, and Zoya Winkelfoos added six aces and five kills to lead the Lady Scots. 

Utica dominates Zanesville 3-0

Utica improved to 1-1 on the young season and 1-0 in Licking County Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Zaneseville, 25-7, 25-11, 25-18 on Aug. 23. The Redskins were led by senior Carlie Parsons with seven kills, seven aces, and six digs and junior Emma Kimpel’s seven kills, eight service aces, and three digs. Junior Emilee Ellis finished with three kills, seven assists, four digs, and one block. Senior Ellie Boggs had three kills and sophomore Alexa Gosnell had 11 assists and three aces.

Cardington-Lincoln hangs loss on Fredericktown, 3-0

Cardington-Lincoln started the season 2-0 and handed Fredericktown (3-1, 0-1) their first loss with a conference 3-0 win (25-14, 27-25, 25-17).

The Lady Pirates had 41 kills led by Audrey Brininger, who had 17 kills for the second straight match. Brininger also finished with one block, nine digs, and four receptions. Maddie Linkous had nine kills, Cadie Long had 15 digs, Jadine Mills had 34 assists, and Alexis Crone and Izzy Wickline finished with three blocks each. The Lady Freddies were paced by freshmen Ella Bouton (nine kills) and Mya Bryant (eight kills). Grace Sipes finished with six kills and 12 digs and Julia Partington had 12 digs and 24 assists.
