Bridges places third in Chapel Hill Invitational; Trojans, Jackets finish well

More than 100 local golfers descended on Mount Vernon’s Chapel Hills Golf Course on Aug. 5 to play in the 2022 Chapel Hill Varsity Invitational, hosted by Mount Vernon High School. Stormy weather stopped play at one point, but when it resumed, there were some red-hot individual scores recorded, with Mount Vernon's Ben Bridges reaching the podium, and the team action was fierce.

Twenty-one schools fielded fivesomes to tee off at the par-72 event. Mason won the shootout with a 292, four strokes ahead of St. Xavier and six shots lower than St. Charles, as all three schools came home in under 300. Mason was led by individual winner Timmy Hollenbeck, who ran away from the field with a 64, five strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

Locally, Centerburg and Mount Vernon fared well, with the Trojans finishing seventh with a cumulative total of 311 and Mount Vernon coming in eighth with a combined score of 313. Bridges led all Yellow Jacket golfers with a 70, Dash Lepley fired a 77, Evan Stetler shot an 82, Maddox Snyder came home with an 84 and Griffin Beach completed the course with an 87. Bennett Hill had low score for the Trojans, with a 74. Josh Hacket shot a 76, Nick Meyers had a 79, Dallas Cornett finished with an 82 and Drew Meyers signed in with a 92.

Individually, Mason’s Hollebeck led the pack with a blazing 64. Ashland’s Kamden Mowry fired a sizzling 69 for second place. Yellow Jacket Bridges tied for third with a low round of 70. George Baker of St. Xavier also shot a 70. Bridges was named to the All-Tournament team.
