Mount Vernon Co-Ed Softball moves on to tournamant play

Heading into tournamant play in the Mount Vernon Co-Ed Softball League, T,J. Thorpe finished as the No.1 seed by going undefeated at 14-0. Honey Buckets Tavern is No. 2 at 12-2, and Bad Compoany is No. 3 at 11-3. The league had 15 teams in a round-robin season schedule.

By the rankings below, the top 7 teams were determined to be the A-Bracket, and the following 8 are the B-bracket for balanced tournamant competition.

The B-Bracket tournament will be Sunday, July 17.  The winner of that tournament will advance as the 8th seed in the A-bracket and get a chance to compete in that tournament the following weekend.

In recent action, there were seven blowouts and three close games.

Buckeye Crane 18, Precision Floor 9

After trailing the first two frames July 10, Buckeye Crane held Precision Flour scoreless the rest of the way and cruised.

Buckeye Crane scored three runs to start the game, but the home Precision Floor had their bats working in the first as well with four runs to make it a 4-3 game. Buckeye Crane tacked on a pair of runs to take the lead briefly, but Precision Floor piled on five more runs to make it a 9-5 game after two innings. 

Buckeye Crane then scored five runs in the third and added two runs in the fifth and three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. 

Jarred Curry led the offense for Buckeye Crane, launching a homer and adding a double and two singles. Maria Hairston had a triple and a single. Steve Travel and Josh Croston each had two doubles and three singles. For Precision Floor, Austin and Ashley Wyatt each hit a homer and a single. Katie Mitchell had three hits on the day, including a double. Doug Neighbarger added a double and a single.

Maximum Nutrition 11, J. Gorsuch 10

In a back-and-forth battle between Maximum Nutrition and J. Gorsuch, the game was tied 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh, and Maximum Nutrition was able to put a run on the board and take an 11-10 win.

Maximum Nutrition went up 2-0 in the first, but the lead didn’t last long, with J. Gorsuch putting four runs up to make it a 4-2 game. J. Gorsuch extended the lead with three more runs in the third, making it 7-2, and then added another run in the fourth to go up 8-2. Maximum Nutrition scored a pair of runs in the fourth and then four more in the fifth to tie the ballgame at 8-8. J. Gorsuch went up 9-8 with a sixth-inning run, but Maximum Nutrition scored twice to go up 10-9 going into the final inning. J. Gorsuch tied the game 10-10, but Maximum Nutrition scored to secure the victory.

Shawn Maxwell led the way for Maximum Nutrition, belting a home run to go along with a double and single. Hunter Shields had a homer and a single in the win. Eric Leeper doubled and singled. For J. Gorsuch, Brandon McLaughlin doubled twice and singled. Tony Shearer had three hits in the game, including a double. Logan Smith and Luke Yetzer each doubled and singled.

Honey Buckets 13, Buckeye Crane 2

The game was tight with Honey Buckets up 2-1 after two innings, but then the flood gates opened and Honey Buckets scored two runs in the third and fourth, and put up seven runs in the fifth. Buckeye Crane managed a run in the fifth but couldn’t find a way to wake up the bats, and Honey Buckets took home an easy win.

Ethan Abell brought the power with a pair of homers and a double for Honey Buckets. Nate Davis had three hits on the day with a triple, double and single. Brandon Davis, Devon Stevenson and Adam O’Bryan doubled. Buckeye Crane was led by Kevin earnest, who doubled and singled twice. Josh Crouston, Brooklyn Tipton and Owen Miller all doubled as well.

Bad Company 11 Ace of Diamonds 6

Justin Shaw and Travis Cornell each slugged homers to lead Bad Company.

Bad Company went up 4-1 after two innings, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two frames. They followed with a four-run third and after Ace of Diamonds scored three runs in their half, it was an 8-4 game. Bad Company scored a run in the fourth and then four in the sixth to go up 13-4. Ace of Diamonds put up two runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to come back, with Bad Company sealing the win.

Shaw singled twice to go along with his homer to lead Bad Company. Cornell added a double. Dustin McDowell doubled twice and singled twice in the win. Ace of Diamonds was led by Sam LuPicolo, who had a homer, a double and two singles. Brody McMahon homered and singled. Jordan Walker had three singles for Ace of Diamonds.

Bad Company 11, Mohican Lodge 1

It was all Bad Company from the beginning.

Bad Company scored a run in the first, two runs in the second and fourth, and one run in the fifth. The big inning came in the bottom of the sixth, in which Bad Company scored five runs. Mohican Lodge managed one run in the fourth.

Justin Shaw homered and singled twice to lead the offense. Jordan Burson homered and doubled. Jeffrey Holbrook tripled and singled, while Travis Cornell doubled twice and singled. Mohican Lodge’s lone run came on a solo shot by John Riggins, who also singled twice. Corbin Wengerd hit a triple. 

A+ Autobrokers 11, Tubba’s Tops 7

A+ Autobrokers fended off a late-inning surge by Tubba’s Tops.

Tubba’s Tops opened the game with a run, but didn’t manage another until they put six on the board in the sixth inning. However, A+ Autobrokers' consistent scoring and ability to keep Tubba’s Tops off the board led to the win. A+ Autobrokers scored one in the first, three times in both the second and third, a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, and then two in the sixth.

Justin Parker had a homer and two doubles for the A+ Autobrokers. Dave Murphy had a home run for A+ as well. Tubba’s Tops was led by Brayden Lama, who homered and singled. Trey Kendrick had four hits in the game, including a double. Macy Need singled twice and doubled.

Precision Floor and Trim 9, Outkast 7

Outkast came out of the gate hot with a four-run first, but Precision Floor and Trim had a big fifth inning to secure the 9-7 win.

Outkast went up 4-1 after one inning and then put two runs on the board in the top of the third to go up 6-1. Precision Floor and Trim responded with a three-run third inning and a five-run fourth to go up 9-6. Outkast put a run on the board in the sixth, but the damage had already been done by Precision Floor and Trim to take the victory.

There weren’t many extra base hits on either side in the game, despite putting high numbers on the board. Austin Wyatt doubled and singled in the win. Ashley Wyatt had the only other extra base hit with a double. Outkast also only had two extra base hits. Mike Collins homered and hit a pair of singles. Alvin Wengerd doubled and hit a single.

TJ Thorpe 16, Coffing Electric 4

TJ Thorpe opened up with a 3-0 lead after one inning and never trailed.

TJ Thorpe scored again in the second and then exploded for an eight-run third inning before Coffing Electric put a run on the board in the top of the fourth to make it a 12-1 ballgame. TJ Thorpe scored three more runs in the fourth inning to go up 15-1, but Coffing Electric inched back with three fifth-inning runs. TJ Thorpe scored an insurance run in the fifth to take the win.

Bryce Geiger had a homer and two singles in the win for TJ Thorpe. The only other extra base hit was Donnie McClary’s double. He also singled twice. For Coffing Electric, Raymond Young and Corey Webb each hit doubles for the team’s biggest hits of the day.

Howard Hilton 5, the Hangout 3

Howard Hilton and the Hangout were locked in a close game, but the Howard Hilton squad was able to hold on.

The Hangout went up 1-0 in the second inning and held that lead until the fourth, when Howard Hilton’s bats woke up and they put four runs on the board. The Hangout scored another run in the fifth to cut the lead to two, but Howard Hilton scored in the fifth as well to make it 5-2. The Hangout had one last-ditch effort in the seventh as they scored a run, but Howard Hilton was able to fend them off for the win.

Carl Busse was the top hitter for Howard Hilton, with a triple and double in the win. Kohl Perkins hit a double and singled twice. Avery Mullins also had two singles in the game. JJ Davis had three singles to lead the way for the Hangout. Brody Blubaugh had Hangout's lone extra base hit with a double, and Zach Bragg singled twice.

Precision Floor and Trim 15, A+ Autobrokers 3

Precision Floor and Trim put three runs on the board to start the game off with a 3-0 lead after one inning, and the team never looked back.

Precision Floor and Trim went up 8-0 after scoring five runs in the fifth, but  A+ added two runs in the second and one in the third to cut the lead to 8-3. Precision Floor and Trim held A+ Autobrokers scoreless the rest of the way and scored two runs in the fifth and five runs in the seventh.

Austin Wyatt had a four-hit day with two doubles to lead the charge for Precision Floor and Trim. Doug Neighbarger hit a triple and also doubled. Katie Mitchell tripled and singled. Sara Pope singled twice and doubled. Andrew Walls, Ashley Wyatt and Dani Calkins each had three hits. Sam Yoder doubled and singled for A+ Autobrokers. Tallying a pair of hits each were Dave Murphy, Emily Murphy and Mose Miller.
