CENTERBURG – Knox County Chapter Ohio Horseman's Council recently made a donation to the Kentucky Horse Council.

The Kentucky organization was in need of any used buckets, pitchforks, hay bags and other horse care essentials.

"Our club members got together, went through their barns and collected many used items to send," Kathy Shoemaker, secretary for the Knox County chapter, told the Mount Vernon News.

Despite not having its annual tack auction fundraiser because the pandemic hit, Shoemaker said the chapter had enough money in the treasury to donate supplies, also.

"We used $500 to purchase much-needed wound sprays, gauze, ointments and other first aid necessities for our Kentucky friends," Shoemaker said. "We also had cash donations from club members. Our president, Misty McDonald, drove to the Kentucky horse park on Dec. 19 to deliver the supplies. The Kentucky Horse Council was very appreciative as they had not gotten many first aid items. Our chapter as well as several others from the State of Ohio have been very helpful taking truck loads of needed supplies."

Closer to home, the Knox County Chapter Ohio Horseman's Council plays a big part in keeping the trails open at Thayer Ridge Park, south of Mount Vernon. The group usually has 3-4 work days per year clearing the 3 miles of multi-use trails when trees and branches fall and block the paths which are open to horses, mountain bikes and hikers.

The annual tack auction should be back on for 2022; it's being planned for Feb. 26.
