MOUNT VERNON – David Butler, 71, of Mount Vernon passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at Knox Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born on June 21, 1950, in Mount Vernon to Dale O. and Patricia (Taylor) Butler. He was a 1968 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. In February of 1974, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years in the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged. He married Karen (Bennett, Ores) Butler on 11-11-78, and they were married for 43 years. He retired in 2002 from the Department of Job and Family Services in Franklin and Richland counties after working there for several years. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Moose, had a Fellowship Degree with the Loyal Order of the Moose and was a member of the Mount Vernon American Legion. David was known endearingly by his nephews and nieces as Uncle Buck. Although he was not openly affectionate with his family, David was always there when anyone in his family needed him and was always there to support his children and grandchildren in their school and sport activities.  

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Lisa (Tracy) (Ores) Hunter of Fredericktown and Craig (Sharon) Ores of Bellville; four grandchildren, Amberly (Preston) Boyd of Bellville, Kalie (Jordan) Farmer of Columbus, Rachel Hunter of Bucyrus and Hunter Auck of Morgantown, West Virginia (formerly of Fredericktown); four great-grandchildren, Rowen, Nora and Brooks Boyd of Bellville and Cora Farmer of Columbus; siblings R. Dennis (Soni) Butler of Daytona Beach, Florida, Gayanne (J. Patrick) Clifford of Kingsport, Tennessee and Barbi (Dan) Neighbarger of Howard; nephews Sean (Trisha) Butler of Kissimmee, Florida, Alex (Jenny) Clifford of Lafayette, Indiana, Jordan (Christy) Butler of Palm Coast, Florida, and Stephen (Kristen) Neighbarger of Mt. Gilead; nieces Amber (Brian) Bierkortte of Johnstown and Adrianne (Anthony) Todd of Kingsport, Tennessee; four great-nephews; eight great-nieces; and special buddy Tucker the Cairn Terrier.  

David was proceeded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Stephen; and a great-nephew, Lincoln Neighbarger. 

Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 7, from 1-2 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Homes – Lasater Chapel. A service will follow, beginning at 2 p.m. with Mr. Roger Marra officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
