East Knox stays undefeated, outlasts Danville, 52- 47
The East Knox Bulldogs started slowly, then ramped up their offense higher each quarter to remain unbeaten and improve their record to 6-0, 5-0 in KMAC play with a hard-fought 52-47 win over host Danville.
The Tuesday night loss dropped the Blue Devils to 2-6 and 1-5 in KMAC play.
The Devils started hot and took a 12-8 first-quarter lead on three deuces by Walker Weckesser and a three apiece by Darren Mickley and Max Payne. Sam Whitney scored six of the Bulldogs’ eight in the first quarter.
The Dogs spread their scoring around in quarter No. 2 as they increased to 12 points and tied the game at the half, 20-20. Mickley put in five second-quarter points for Danville.
In the third, EK added 15 points, divvied up among four players, while Mickley and Weckesser each netted threes for Danville. The frame put the Dogs ahead by five, but Danville wouldn’t go away and battled to the end. The Dogs held on to the lead in a tight fourth (17-17), led by Shane Knepp’s nine points – on a three and six-for-six at the line. Danville matched EK in the fourth, paced by Cam Miller’s seven points and five by Mickley.
Both teams took care of the ball, with East Knox committing only six turnovers to 10 or Danville. The Bulldogs got scoring from six players, but the points came in bunches for four of them. Knepp led with 19, Whitney added 11, Dillon Moreland scored 10 and Peyton Lester put in eight. The Blue Devils had five scorers, led by Mickley with 16, Weckesser with 12 and Miller with eight.
Centerburg uses big fourth by Mead to put away Freddies, 60-43
Fredericktown took a 4-0 lead to start Tuesday night’s game against unbeaten Centerburg, but the Trojans rode 10 first-quarter points by Isiah Reynolds to take a 12-10 lead after one. Kaid Carpenter scored four in the first for the Freddies.
Trevor Bellman sank a long three and two free throws in the second for Fredericktown; however, Centerburg spread scoring among five players to take a 27-19 halftime lead.
Brady Lester took over in the third for the Freddies with nine points, as Fredericktown cut into the Centerburg lead, whittling the advantage to six points entering the fourth. McKinnon Mead took control in the fourth for the Trojans, swishing three threes and hitting for 15 of Centerburg’s 19 points to put the game away. Mead also hit all six of his fourth-quarter free throws.
Centerburg received scoring from six players, led by Reynolds and Mead with 19 points each. Fredericktown also had six scorers, paced by Brady Lester’s 13, Kaid Carpenter’s 11 and Trevor Bellman’s nine.
Centerburg committed only 10 turnovers as it ran its record to 7-0, 5-0 in KMAC play, and Fredericktown turned the ball over 14 times as its record fell to 2-6 and 1-5 in KMAC.
Golden Knights gear up with big third quarter to down Loudonville, 54-33
It took awhile for the Golden Knights to get their offense in gear, but a huge third quarter fueled Northmor, which evened its season record at 4-4 with a 54-33 demolition of the Loudonville Redbirds on Tuesday night.
The Knights only hit for three in the first quarter and were down 6-3 entering the second. A 14-6 run in the second gave Northmor a lead it never relinquished as it ended the first half up 17-14. Northmor came out smoking in the third with a 22-5 run to go up 39-19 entering the final quarter. The Knights took care of business in the fourth, 15-14, to finish up with a 21-point margin of victory.
Northmor received scoring contributions from eight players. Graesin Cass was 9-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and finished with 22 points, and Grant Bentley scored 10 and was 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, to lead the Golden Knights. Max Lower controlled the boards with 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards, and Bentley added nine rebounds. Cass, Lower, Logan Mariotti and Caleb Schnuerer each had three steals, and Bentley had three deflections for Northmor.
Free throws and huge second half propel Indians to 66-61 win over Pirates
A second half that saw 85 points highlighted an exciting nail-biter between Mount Gilead and Cardington-Lincoln on Tuesday night.
The Indians put 45 points on the board in the half to 40 for the Pirates, and Mount Gilead came away with a 66-61 victory. With all of that scoring, the game was won at the foul line, as Mount Gilead attempted 34 more free throws and held a 25-3 advantage in free throws made.
The Indians (5-3, 4-2 KMAC) took an 11-8 first-quarter lead. The Pirates (2-6, 1-4 KMAC) charged back on the second to tie the game at 21-21 at the half. A scoring show in the third saw Cardington net 21 points, and the Indians hit for 20. A huge 25-point fourth was enough to tame the Pirates, who put up 19 of their own.
Cardington was 8-for-18 from three-point land to keep the game close, and C-L hit 51% of its attempts from the field, but the game was won at the line, as Mount Gilead sank 25 of 38 free throws, to only three of four by Cardington-Lincoln. Twenty-six personal fouls were called on C-L, and only 10 were whistled on Mount Gilead.
The Indians committed only six turnovers in the game to 12 for the Pirates, and the Indians controlled the offensive boards with 13 offensive rebounds to nine for the Pirates,
Elijah Chafin led Mount Gilead with 28 points in 32 minutes, going 15-for-17 at the line. Paul Butterman scored 15, as did Carter Kennon. Butterman finished with nine rebounds, and Chafin added three steals. Among seven team scorers, Gavyn Crockett scored 26 for Cardington-Lincoln, including 4-for-6 from three. AJ Brehm added nine, and Kalin Briggs had six assists for the Pirates.
Living by the three, Yellow Jackets beat Watkins Memorial, 59-44
Owynn Gleason sank five three-point field goals, and the Yellow Jackets drained 12 from beyond the arc, as Mount Vernon upended Watkins Memorial, 59-44, on Tuesday at home.
Winning their fifth straight game and improving to 5-2, 3-0 OCC, Mount Vernon outmanned Watkins (2-3) despite a slow start in which it put up only six points in the first and fell behind 13-6.
A 20-point second quarter (to nine points for Watkins) gave the Jackets a 26-22 lead at the half, and they built on that lead with a 19-12 third quarter. The Jackets attended to business with a 14-10 fourth quarter to finish with the 15-point win.
Mount Vernon had scoring contributions from seven players. Gleason led the way with 19, Trevor Buttke scored 11, Caden Rowland had 10, Beau Bridges scored eight and Nolan Belcher chipped in with six. In addition to Gleason’s handful of threes, Belcher, Bridges and Rowland sank two threes each, and Buttke hit one from downtown.
