MOUNT VERNON – David J. McElroy, 66, of Mount Vernon passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, at his home. He was born on Feb. 11, 1955, in Wadsworth, Ohio. David was a 1973 graduate of Fredericktown High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ohio State University in 1977.

David served as president of AMG Industries from 1991 to 2015 and most recently served as vice president of VerMac Industries. In his spare time, he enjoyed competitive shooting, hiking, traveling, cooking and bringing people together. He had a large heart and was always mindful of people in need and supporting our local veterans and law enforcement programs. He is also remembered for his great love of Jamaica, its culture and its people. Throughout his career, David served on numerous boards and organizations that supported his community and state and was a proud supporter of the Republican Party for Knox County and the State of Ohio. He was also a member of Mount Zion Lodge #9 F&AM and was honored to have received the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodore.

He is survived by his wife, Anne McArthur McElroy, whom he married on Sept. 14, 1979; his children, Michael McElroy of Columbus and Stephanie (Nick) Burson of Mount Vernon; two granddaughters, Olivia Burson and Emily Burson; a brother, Dennis (Carol) McElroy of Fredericktown; his mother, Patsy Jean Wilson McElroy Busbee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James A. McElroy; and a sister, Lisa McElroy Thomas. 

A celebration of life Service will be held on Monday, Dec. 13, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Glenn A. Gallagher Centre, 1451 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of David J. McElroy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the David McElroy Memorial Fund established at the Knox County Foundation or to the American Patriots Organization, an organization designed to assist current and former members of the U.S. armed forces and law enforcement officers
