HOWARD – Twice now, Donnie Rogers’ good luck has benefited East Knox Local Schools.

Most recently, Rogers, a member of the Knox Educational Service Center Governing Board, won a $1,000 scholarship for an East Knox graduating senior.

Although he didn’t know it at the time, Rogers’ luck prevailed on Nov. 8 when he and fellow board member Vicki Bechtel attended the Ohio School Boards Association’s annual Capital Conference and Trade Show in Columbus. Rogers stopped by the trade show booth of Vista Consulting Group of Lebanon, Ohio, and dropped a disc in the company’s Plinko board game display. The disc bounced around before finally landing in a slot marked “$1,000 scholarship.”

Many other trade show-goers also played the game and saw their discs land in the same slot. But, lo and behold, Rogers’ name was drawn from among all of those who filled out a ticket before continuing on their way.

“They called and said I had won. At first, I didn’t even recall what they were talking about, but I’m glad to have this for an East Knox senior,” Rogers said.

Shari Hanna, representing Vista Consulting Group, was at East Knox on Tuesday to meet with Rogers and Superintendent Steve Larcomb.

“We offered a $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships at the trade show,” Hanna said. “Mr. Rogers’ name was drawn as the winner of the $1,000 scholarship.”

Rogers turned the scholarship over to Larcomb, who, in turn, said the guidance department will recommend an eligible and worthy recipient.

Rogers is well known in the East Knox community. He previously served a decade on the district school board and since about 1974 has been a member of the chain gang at Bulldog home football games.

In addition to serving on the Knox ESC governing board, he also is a member of the board of the Knox County Career Center.

And that other time his luck benefitted East Knox?

“I won a football autographed by Cincinnati Bengals’ receiver A.J. Green,” Rogers said. “I donated it to the booster club, and they raffled it off at a hog roast.”
