MOUNT VERNON – Noelle Decker and Wayne Finnell don’t believe in celebrating halfway.
The couple turned their Mount Vernon house into a Halloween display so ghoulish it would make the Addams Family jealous.
Decker and Finnell set up their front yard with gravestones, witches, cobwebs and dozens of skeletons. Some of those skeletons are shown walking, climbing walls, carrying coffins or trying to climb out of said coffins.
Go inside, and visitors are greeted by a family of skeletons sitting around a dining table, complete with candles and more cobwebs. In the corner, another skeleton is petting a dog skeleton.
The whole display took Decker and Finnell about three weeks to set up.
It was Decker who began the macabre menagerie over 20 years ago. As the collection grew, the pair moved to the corner of High and Park streets, where they entertained trick-or-treaters for years.
Five years ago, they moved to their current home on Grange Avenue near Old Mansfield Road. They didn’t get a single trick-or-treater that first year, but a few have come by since then.
“We love to show us off to kids,” Finnell said. “We’d like to get more kids here for trick-or-treating.”
So just how large can the display get? Decker said she doesn’t necessarily want to settle for just decorations.
“I’d love to have a haunted house someday,” Decker said. “Maybe someday.”
