MOUNT VERNON – Mark S. Thomas, 68, of Mount Vernon passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, at Knox Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on April 14, 1953, and lived his whole life in Mount Vernon.

Mark graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1971. After graduation, he spent time pursuing his passion of playing music, performing with several bands throughout the years, the most notable being Sweet Revenge. Mark’s other passion was caring for others, which led him to his career in nursing, beginning in 1994 and continuing until his retirement in 2019. He was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast and a lifetime H.O.G member.

In 1997, he met the love of his life, Candy (Couch) Thomas, and together they spent 24 years in love and laughter.

Mark was a special soul. He brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. He always had a silly joke or funny story to lighten any situation and would wrap you up in the tightest bear hug you’ve ever had.

Mark is survived by his wife, Candy Thomas; son, Christopher (Debbie) Hicks; daughter, Cassandra Hoeflich; son-in-law, Casey Hoeflich; grandchildren, Leia, Aria and Mason Hoeflich; stepchildren, Donald Marofsky, Christopher Marofsky, Tiffany Massie, Joshua Graham and Sarah Graham; brothers, John (Cheryl) Mauler, Jonathan Mauler and Kelly “Boomer” McMurtry; sisters, Paula Mauler Powell and Amanda Mauler; and many special nieces, nephews and friends that he considered his family.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Mearl and Eloise Thomas; his father, John Mauler; his mother, Marjorie McMurtry; brother, Bill McMurtry; sister, Vicky Mauler Watson; and a brother-in-law, Tony Watson.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with Pastor Marvin Haught officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that family and friends wear casual attire to the visitation and funeral in honor of Mark’s love for Harley Davidsons, Cleveland Browns, the Fredericktown Freddies and rock'n'roll music.
