Tom Augustine drove all the way from Pennsylvania recently to donate several unique items from Pittsburgh Plate Glass to the Ariel-Foundation Park Museum.

As a former salesman at PPG in Pittsburgh, he ended up at all of the plants at some point, including Mount Vernon. He also traveled to Clarksburg, W.V., frequently. That’s where the framed stamps he donated are from – they were used to identify the various types of glass coming out of the plant.

Augustine also donated a binder full of old brochures and publications from the company, all in pristine condition, as well as a calculations book used by the factory workers.

Park visitors can look forward to seeing them next season.

Fall Park updates

From Executive Director Mark Fritz, here are some important fall park updates of which guests and visitors should be aware:

  • There will be a goose hunt in the park on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The park will be closed from dawn until 1 p.m. that day. There may be one more hunt date in November. Details will be posted on the Park’s Facebook page.
  • The grass throughout the park will be kept longer than usual this fall to allow the root systems to develop.
  • The soil on the western side of the park will be tilled in order to replant the wildflower pollinator garden.
  • The ADA kayak launch will be pulled out of central lake on Friday, Oct. 29, for cleaning and maintenance. It will be out of the water until March 2022.

Candles & Carols

Candles & Carols will be Saturday, Dec. 4, as part of the city’s Festival of Lights. This year’s event will also honor the memory of Dick Murray and is sponsored by Kidwell & Cunningham law firm. Details will be coming soon on the park website, www.arielfoundationpark.org, or on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
